Motorbike riders could save their own life by regularly performing important safety checks, an expert has asserted.
TyreSafe and IAM have issued the joint advice as part of Bike Tyre Safety Month, which aims to remind riders of all abilities to properly maintain their vehicles.
During this period, many garages across the UK will be offering free safety checks.
In particular, long journeys should be preceded by a number of reviews, including checking the tread, depth and condition of wheels. Tears, cracks and bulges should also be looked out for, it has been suggested.
IAM's chief examiner Peter Rodger said: "Riding on correctly-maintained tyres is vital to biker safety and can also help to prevent premature tyre wear."
He added that doing this could also reduce the amount of fuel a bike consumes and help it lessen its CO2 emissions.
TyreSafe chairman Stuart Jackson also commented that the measures can help to prevent accidents caused by defective tyres.
According to the government's latest statistics – a report titled Road Casualties Great Britain: 2007 – there were 247,780 accidents of all levels of seriousness on the country's roads during the last 12-month period for which data is available.
People interested in transport safety may want to have a quick insurance Q&A with their provider to check what they are covered for in the event of an adverse circumstance.
