Arrive Alive Scheme Looks At Other Offences

Sunday, 06/06/2010

The Arrive Alive road safety scheme is branching out by targeting other offences. Local police forces and casualty reduction partnership across the country are teaming up to catch out drivers not wearing seatbelts and using mobile phones behind the wheel.

Recently, the Department for Transport increase the punishment for people caught using the devices on the road to a £60 fine and three-point licence penalty. A spokesman for a locoal constabulary remarked that the body has received "numerous complaints" from the public regarding rogue drivers.

"I've arranged with the Arrive Alive team to attend the area with their cameras, not to capture speeders but other offences such as not wearing seat belts and drivers using mobile phones," commented the road safety official.

The primary aim of the Arrive Alive scheme is to provide a programme of presentations specifically for drivers aged 50 plus, focusing mostly on the retired age group. The UK has a rising number of older, experienced drivers on its roads. Older drivers bring a wealth of knowledge and tolerance to their driving; however with today’s constantly rising volume of traffic and complex modern road systems the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) recognise the inevitable effects of ageing can affect driving.
