Britain’s best drives

With summer reportedly here many of us are itching to find a nice piece of road to enjoy in the sun. Being out on a quiet bit of open road can remind us all of simple pleasure of driving. The challenge of sweeping curves and stunning scenery will often be enough to get people out of their usual routes and into unexplored terrain.

Some of these drives will be best kept secrets while others will be well recognised as superb. The AA places a drive around Exmoor at the top of its list - near the sea with grand coastlines and stone villages it is nothing if not breathtaking. The A87 also rides high in many lists between Invergarry and the Isle of Skye – it was recognised for the very small amount of traffic and the challenge found in the roads.

The general consensus for great driving in Britain is to stay away from London and the M25 – junction 5 to 21 is considered the worst stretch of road in the country. Another area to avoid is the A303 which connects London and the south-west, reportedly for the overcrowding of caravans.

You may want to get out into the countryside to find some of Britain’s best roads – but remember, some of these roads will not be as well maintained as you may like! As long as you stay away from the main traffic funnels and large cities there is bound to be some undiscovered route which can become yours. Why not take the scenic route home?
