Motor insurance customers in the UK appear to be adopting green driving techniques, according to a leading website promoting green vehicles. A spokesperson from the company said reports have shown average speeds on motorways have dropped over recent months.
He stated: "People seem to be driving with fuel economy in mind, given how much it costs even to fill up the smallest car these days."
He added driving more smoothly is the best way to save money when driving in urban areas. Road users should travel at a steady speed and anticipate what traffic lights are going to do, he advised. The worst thing you can do is accelerate hard and slam the brakes on at the last moment, he concluded.
A report from the Energy Savings Trust has shown the average motorist can save around £325 a year by employing smart driving techniques. The organisation - which ran the Ford Smart Driving Challenge - found it was possible for drivers to improve their fuel economy by more than 33 per cent.
In addition, recent research has shown that emissions have fallen by record levels due to the smaller number of older ‘less clean’ vehicles on the road, thanks to the scrappage scheme.
