Drivers looking for new cars are often confused by the motoring jargon used by dealers and many feel completely out of their depth on the forecourt. This is the conclusion of a new survey by fish4cars, which reveals that around 70 per cent of motorists have bought a car without understanding all of the information given to them by the seller.
The research also shows that well over half of car hunters have purchased a vehicle without knowing everything they need to know about its functions, specifications or its history, which could be essential when applying for car insurance.
A third of people quizzed believed that SUV stood for Standard Urban Vehicle rather than Sports Utility Vehicle. The sales director at fish4cars, urged bemused buyers to ask a dealer if there is something he or she does not understand.
"It's important to remember that they're not trying to hoodwink you, they're just trying to give you as much information as possible to help you make a decision."
Motorists are advised to choose a well established and reputable dealership when looking for a new or used car and to check whether they belong to a known trade association.
