Car insurance customers who may be worried about financial pressures at the moment could benefit from car-sharing, it has been suggested.
Commute Smart Week was initiated by Work Wise UK, which highlighted the potential benefits of sharing journeys. This was backed by Liftshare, which said not only can it save cash but boost productivity and create a positive working environment. Liftshare is a website where drivers can search for people in their area who do similar journeys so they can arrange a car share.
A Work Wise UK chief executive also explained that it could help to cut congestion and ease traffic on busy roads.
"There are 38 million empty car seats on the road every day. This is economic and environmental insanity," he added. Liftshare stated that if car occupancy levels were raised by just two per cent, national mileage would decrease by approximately three billion miles.
The knock-on effect of reducing overall traffic congestion and public transport overcrowding by extending the rush hour and reducing peak demand through smarter working and commuting will make the daily commute more bearable for those workers that have no choice when and how to travel.
In the US, certain road lanes - which are often less busier - are reserved for those who share cars. These are called car pool lanes.
