Car thieves 'invited in by drivers who do not cover up'

Tuesday, 27/11/2007

Motorists may be encouraging opportunistic criminals to target their vehicles by not ensuring that valuable items are out of sight, according to a Lancashire news source.

The Northwich Guardian has commented that police in the region have warned drivers that they may be inviting an incident by leaving items of worth on display.

It added that those looking to avoid being made a victim should make sure their automobile does not look like an easy target.

A break-in can seriously compromise a car insurance policy, with those caught out possibly paying more for a premium in the future.

"Preventing this type of crime only takes a few seconds and a bit of common sense," said Community Support Officer Simon Martindale.

Meanwhile, Home Office figures have shown that there were 1.7 million car-crime incidents during 2005 and 2006.
