Carjacking 'feared by six in ten'

Tuesday, 26/08/2008

Six out of ten motorists in the UK live in fear of being made the victim of a carjacking, it has been reported.Research from Admiral found that out of 2,667 drivers polled, sixty per cent stated that they are increasingly locking their doors while travelling. It added that motorists also fear having their vehicles broken into - something which could seriously invalidate a car insurance policy.Drivers living in Northern Ireland and Yorkshire were found to be the most fearful of such a theft, with 88 per cent stating their concern. But Sue Longthorn from Admiral has stated that carjacking is not too common. She said: "Carjacking is an extremely rare crime. In the last year we have only had five cases reported to us."This comes as statistics from the Home Office show that vehicle crime has fallen by 61 per cent since its 1995 peak.
