Companies 'need to focus on road safety'

Tuesday, 24/02/2009

Businesses need to do more to reduce the number of car insurance claims that result from work-related crashes, it has been suggested.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa), between a quarter and a third of all road traffic collisions involve someone who is behind the wheel as part of their job.

In other words, 200 people die or are seriously injured in the UK every week as the result of employment-related crashes.

Roger Bibbings, Rospa\'s occupational safety advisor, said: "Being killed or injured while driving as part of one\'s job is the biggest risk faced by most workers."

He stated companies need to start placing road traffic accidents on their mainstream health and safety agenda.

This would ensure more employees arrive home to their families in one piece each evening and significantly improve Britain\'s road safety credentials, Mr Bibbings concluded.

Motorists may find the cost of their car insurance premiums fall if they start using public transport to get to and from work.
