Road users were advised to give themselves more time to slow down and stop, even if the roads have already been treated by gritters.
Failure to heed the official recommendations could potentially result in drivers getting involved in a collision.

The Highways Agency said it is "advising drivers that the best way to stay safe on the roads during severe weather is to plan their journeys".
