Motorists in Northumbria have been advised of the consequences of being caught driving while under the influence.
Police in the region warned that drivers who were convicted of taking to the roads while over the legal alcohol limit could face a ban of at least a year.
Officers also stated that as soon as a person's motoring ban had passed, they would still have to deal with further consequences of the crime.
For example, convicted drink-drivers would probably face "huge increases" in their car insurance premiums, as cover providers would see them as a danger on the road.
Chief Inspector Kevin Wellden commented: "We will continue enforcing the law and anyone stupid enough to risk drinking or taking drugs and driving will be arrested and charged."
He added that drink-drivers were not only endangering their own lives, but those of other road users as well.
This comes as the Evening Express reports that 21 motorists have been caught over the limit by Grampian Police during the second week of a Christmas clampdown against the crime.
