Motorists across the UK have been warned to stay careful on the roads after severe weather conditions have been forecast.
Royal Bank of Scotland and Green Flag have advised people to check the local press for updates before setting off on their journeys, adding that they should perhaps allow for extra time.
The companies have also told drivers to use major roads rather than smaller ones and that a change of clothes and blanket should be kept in the vehicle as part of an emergency kit.
According to Green Flag spokesperson Daniel Robinson, people should check that their car insurance policy covers them against all scenarios this winter.
He said: "Drivers who don't want the risk of being stuck on the side of the road for hours should double check their breakdown cover is up to date, so the recovery team can be on standby in the event of a breakdown."
Department for Transport figures show that 3,150 people were killed on UK roads in 2006.
