Driving test fees to go up

Thursday, 26/03/2009

Prospective car insurance customers looking at taking their driving test soon may find they have to shell out more than they were expecting.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has announced the practical exam will now cost £62 instead of £56.50, while the price of sitting the theory paper will go up from £30 to £31.

Learner drivers will start paying the new fees for tests booked on or after March 30th.

DSA chief executive Rosemary Thew said the organisation was doing everything within its power to keep costs down, especially in light of the troubled economic climate.

However, she claimed the increases announced this week were absolutely necessary.

"The agency is largely self-funding. We receive only a small amount from general taxation and have to recover most of our costs through test fees," Ms Thew explained.

Earlier this year, DSA announced it was introducing a two-part modular test for motorcyclists, with bookings being taken from March 30th.
