Drug testing 'to be performed on Lancashire drivers'

Thursday, 24/04/2008

Motorists in Lancashire may soon find themselves being tested for drugs by police officers in the region, according to a local news source.

The Lancashire Evening Post has stated that officials are to assess the condition of travellers by asking them to stand on one leg after pulling them over.

Drivers who pick up a road conviction could have difficulty picking up car insurance in the future, as cover firms could increase costs if they view motorists as a road risk.

Lancashire Police deputy road policing coordinator Ian Ashton remarked: "Drug consumption can substantially degrade a person's ability to divide attention."

Meanwhile, statistics collated by road safety charity Brake have found that 18 per cent of collisions on roads in Britain with fatalities involve drugs.

The research also shows that cannabis is the most common narcotic in accidents which result in death.
