Free course transport scrapped for drink-drivers

Friday, 28/03/2008

Motorists caught drink-driving and ordered to attend rehabilitation courses can no longer expect free transport under new rules from officials in Northamptonshire, it has been reported.

According to Northampton Chronicle and Echo, probation union NAPO has stated that this has resulted in a fall in the number of convicted drivers showing up for the classes.

Being found drunk on the road can see motorists pick up a roads conviction which could lead to higher car insurance policies in future if cover companies consider them a road risk.

Andy Pemberton, acting chief probation officer for the Northampton constabulary, commented that those who miss the courses will be punished.

He said: "If they breach the order and don't make it to the course, they will be held to account for the breach and will go before magistrates again, where they will be dealt with."

Current UK law deems more than 0.8mg blood per 100ml of blood unacceptable for motorists heading on the road.
