Government 'needs to take action to keep children safe'

Sunday, 28/12/2008

If the government wants to cut the number of car insurance claims which involve children being killed or injured, it needs to take steps to encourage more individuals to become lollipop people, according to Brake. The road safety charity explained having such individuals outside schools is vital in keeping youngsters safe.It added the government could encourage more people to take up these roles by offering generous financial rewards and making the roads they patrol as safe as possible.General manager at Brake Sarah Fatica said it was down to the country's leaders to make the job more appealing. She stated the government should "introduce safety measures, including 20 mph speed limits, speed cameras and other traffic calming measures to encourage people back to this important role and to keep our children safe".Brake made these comments after reports claiming there was a shortage of lollipop people across the UK.
