Hang up, MP tells phone-wielding drivers

Friday, 25/04/2008

Exeter motorists have been warned not to use their mobile phone behind the wheel, according to a local news source.

The Express & Echo's Hands Off! campaign has been backed by local official Ben Bradshaw MP, who has stated that it is "vital" that police "come down very hard on those who choose to flout the law".

Motorists who find themselves picking up a conviction for the crime could suffer from increased car insurance costs if cover companies judge them to be a risk on the road.

"We can put a stop to mobile phone use in cars by campaigns, such as the Echo's, drawing attention to the problem," commented Mr Bradshaw.

This comes after the Department for Transport brought in a £60 fine and three-point licence penalty for motorists caught using their mobile phones behind the wheel, introducing the legislation of February 27th 2007.
