Hard shoulder use a 'short-term fix'

Friday, 21/03/2008

Allowing motorists such as car insurance customers to use motorway hard shoulders in order to ease congestion problems is only a temporary fix, according to Green Flag.

The Highways Agency plans to increase the speed limit for driving on the M42 hard shoulder to 60mph, but this scheme may not be a permanent resolution for the heavy traffic and has "some road safety implications".

Gary Amos, spokesperson for Green Flag said: "The hard shoulder should not become a default additional lane for drivers to use, as and when they please. The hard shoulder is there for use in emergency situations and is a dangerous place to be stranded."

Mr Amos also commented that the hard shoulder should only be employed during the busiest times and its use should be stringently monitored.

Thirteen out of 20 cars driven by cabinet ministers are emitting high levels of carbon dioxide according to a report by the Independent, even though the government have goals to cut carbon emissions.
