How could second car insurance cut costs?

Friday, 12/06/2009

If there are two drivers in a household, it may be cost-efficient to insure both at the same time.

Generally, this can be carried out in two ways – purchasing one policy each at the same time and earning an entitlement to discount is a common way of achieving this.

Other firms may offer multicar cover, which is a single policy that includes two vehicles.

Usually, these people must be living in the same dwelling, but do not need to be married or romantically linked.

If a pair of housemates are both careful drivers, this could be an easy way to lower premiums.

However, there can be legal pitfalls if one of the drivers is young.

Some new drivers can fraudulently take out a two-car policy and include their parent as the main driver in order to drive the premium down.

Known as fronting, this is an illegal practice that the authorities can and will prosecute people for should it be discovered.

Options for second car insurance are varied, so it can be important to scour the market for the best deal.
