Hundreds of thousands of motorists in the UK took to the road last year despite not having a valid car insurance policy, according to new research.
Figures recorded by independent price comparison website MoneyExpert.com show that approximately 350,000 people travelled without cover in 2007.
This contravenes the law, which states that motorists must dip into their pockets and pay at for a third party policy at the very least before hitting the road.
But cost is not an excuse for going without insurance, MoneyExpert.com official Sean Gardner commented.
He said: "It's a real worry that many people persist in driving without insurance. They are putting the personal and financial security of others at risk."
This comes as the Essex Echo has reported that recent registration plate thefts recorded in the area are down to criminals attempting to avoid paying out for road tax and car insurance.
