If your car is stolen...

Friday, 03/07/2009

In 2005, 199,531 cars were stolen in England, Scotland and Wales.

It is illegal to go without car insurance in Britain and those who have the utter misfortune to have their motor stolen will thank their lucky stars this law is in effect.

The instant you realise your vehicle has been swiped, call the police and call your insurer. It is always useful to keep the company's number in your phone, in your wallet or somewhere on your person at all times.

The thing is, you may have to wait once the car has been taken, as often they are found abandoned and then returned to the original owner.

In the meantime, some insurance policies will cover the cost of a rented car, or one will be provided. Sometimes this costs a bit extra on top of your normal premiums, but a nominal amount could be a lifesaver if you rely heavily on your motor.

Any car finance contracts in effect will need to be discussed with the provider in question.
