Drivers can be hit with fines for a whole new range of offences under new plans introduced by authorities, it has been reported.
The Times states that the Crown Prosecution Service is to bring in a £2,500 fine if motorists are caught splashing pedestrians by driving through puddles or failing to dip their headlights when appropriate.
It may be that the conviction also poses a risk to car insurance policies, as some firms may see fit to up prices if they believe the driver to be a risk on the road.
The new rules are simply a warning to motorists, according to executive director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council on Transport Safety Rob Gifford.
"What people are being reminded of is that driving is a complicated activity and it is better to concentrate on driving than talking," he told Radio Four Today.
Breakdown firms may be on red alert today as car care firm Comma has stated that the date represents one of the busiest of the year for maintenance.
