'More drivers could face fines' with new speed limits

Monday, 20/04/2009

More drivers could be asked to pay fines if new speed limits are introduced, it has been claimed.

RoadPilot used information from its database to find out that 68 per cent of speed cameras are situated on roads that will be affected if the government overhauls regulations.

The company said this could lead to motorists being charged levies and having points placed on their licence for offences they were not aware they had committed.

Chief executive officer of RoadPilot James Flynn said any changes to speed restrictions must be communication clearly to drivers.

"Many people may not find out about the reduced limit until a notice of intended prosecution arrives on their doorstep," he remarked, adding that the roads in question may be those travelled by motorists for years previously.

Penalty points may cause a consumer's car insurance premium to increase, resulting in more expenditure. Cover prices can also vary given the make and model of a car, or where it will be stored overnight.
