Drivers in the UK do not know what is required of them by law in relation to tyre-tread depths, new research has indicated.
Around 66 per cent of people on the road are unaware of the minimum level which their treads can be, according to a study from Brake and Green Flag.
This could result in motorists increasing the likelihood of being involved in an accident, risking their car insurance policies in the process as cover firms often impose larger bills on those they consider to be a hazard on the roads.
"We are calling on drivers to be vigilant about the condition of their tyres and check them on a weekly basis this winter and throughout the year," said Jools Townsend, Brake head of education.
The law states that a vehicle weighing up to 3,500 kg should have a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm.
