Motorists Are Warned About ‘Black Friday’

Wednesday, 09/12/2009

Studies have revealed that there are more road accidents on a Friday than any other day of the week. Results show that the end-of-the-week rush accounts for more than 17% of accidents.

It’s not surprising that Friday is the worst day of the week for accidents as motorists are tired after a long week at work and can easily get caught up thinking about their weekend plans instead of the road ahead.

End of week fatigue has seen an 11% increase in rush hour accidents on UK roads. The fact that Fridays are traditionally the end of the working week also makes crashes more common with accidents peaking at around 3am.

Driver fatigue or inattention accounted for 40% of deaths and serious injuries on motorways, but just 20% on other roads.

The RAC are urging motorists to take care when driving on Fridays, otherwise there’s a real danger ‘Black Friday’ could become ‘Fatal Friday’ in terms of road accidents.

The worst time to drive on a Friday is between 4pm and 5pm, when millions of workers are heading for home. This time scale has seen 9.8% of the days accidents happen, making it prime time for accidents.

The first steps in reducing the effect of and congestion are identifying and avoiding it. Just a minority of motorists re-planning their routes or the timing of their journeys could help make sure Friday isn’t the worst day of the week for road accidents.
