Motorists 'may be driving less'

Thursday, 29/05/2008

Drivers in the UK used their vehicles less in April than in previous months, according to statistics from the government.

Reuters has reported that the HM Revenue & Customs has analysed fuel duty receipts and found that less petrol and diesel was used during the month.

The news source indicated that this trend could continue into May when the statistics for the month are collated, as the cost of the diesel has risen to its highest month-on-month level since 2000.

It may be that people driving their vehicles less reduce the risk of an accident and therefore minimise the potential damage done to their car insurance policies.

"This year may be the first time we see a change in consumption due to high prices but we expect it to be fairly minimal," said Luke Bosdet of the motoring group AA.

Earlier this week, truck drivers headed to London in order to protest the rising cost of petrol.
