Motorists Pay The Price Of Forgetting MOT

Wednesday, 04/11/2009

Each year around 4.7 Million UK motorists forget to renew MOTs, invalidating their car insurance.

Recent reports have revealed that almost 20% of drivers forget their MOT renewal date, subsequently resulting in them breaking the law by no longer having valid insurance.

Failing to remember a vehicles MOT could result in motorists being penalized with a penalty fine of up to £1,000, even though the cost for renewing a MOT is only £54.

Over the past 12 years, motorists have absorbed an inflation-busting 88% increase in MOT costs, from £28.66 to current level of £54.00. However refusing to pay the price will mean motorists are jeopardising their own and other’s safety and risking prosecution and invalidating their insurance policy.

A shocking 3 million UK motorists had admitted to carrying on driving illegally and without valid insurance – even after they have realised their MOT certificate has expired.

What’s more, even once motorists have become aware that their MOT has ran out it still takes about a third of drivers a month to book their MOT renewal once the date has passed- lengthening the renewal process further.

The failure to have a valid insurance while driving has provoked stern government response with measures to tackle this problem. Motorists failing to renew their MOT certificates and getting their car insurance invalidated in the process are, as such, adding to the problem which costs the country millions of pounds.

Not only are millions of motorists unknowingly driving illegally throughout the UK, in addition many of these drivers will be using cars that are unsafe putting themselves, their passengers and other road users at risk.
