Motorists At Risk On The Roads At Christmas

Tuesday, 22/12/2009

Christmas is a time of parties and social engagements. It’s also a time which could have serious implications for drivers.

The number of motorists caught drink-driving over the Christmas period fell by nearly a fifth in 2008, however now the festive season is getting closer the need for vigilance on the roads is greater than ever.

Police officers will increase the roadside breath test and raise awareness of the risks of driving while under the influence during the festive season.

Motorists are constantly being made aware of the dangers of drink driving as it is a huge risk in the UK, but pedestrians can also cause problems on the roads.

One in three pedestrian fatalities had alcohol levels over the legal limit for driving, and nearly half of all pedestrians killed in road accidents between 10pm and 4am on Friday and Saturday nights are more than twice the drink driving limit – with Christmas falling on a Friday this year the number of accidents could reach even higher figures.

IAM research has shown that young men are more likely to drink and drive than older motorists and women drivers during the Christmas period.

Motorists caught driving under the influence of drink or drugs will be arrested and can expect to lose their licence, be fined or even sent to prison.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has welcomed news that 9,000 drink drivers were removed from our roads during the festive season in 2008 – with hopes that the number will drop this year during the festive season.

Motorists take the risk of a minimum 12 months driving ban, criminal record and large fine. Don't ruin Christmas in a moment of selfishness...Don’t drink and drive!
