Motorists 'should not drink and drive to save money'

Saturday, 04/07/2009

Motorists should not drink and drive to save money on a night out, an expert says.

Direct Line research - conducted in 2009 - finds that 1.3 million people are willing to do this to save money on taxi fares.

Those aged between 18 and 34 are the most likely to commit the offence, the firm comments.

Other social habits – such as driving to a venue but not consuming alcohol - can be altered by a need to save money, it adds.

Socialising closer to home is another way of avoiding getting behind the wheel, it advises.

Head of Direct Line car insurance Maggie Game says there is "no excuse" for committing this crime.

"It's worrying to see the number of people who would drink and drive because they feel saving a few pounds outweighs the risk to themselves and others," she asserts.

Figures released in 2009 revealed that in 2007 an estimated total of 14,480 of road casualties occurred because of a driver being over the limit.

Those who have been banned from using their auto after being convicted of drink driving could want to have a Q&A session with a motor insurance expert to ascertain what their options are for gaining a policy.
