Motorists urged: Kill the conversation

Tuesday, 29/07/2008

Drivers are being told to avoid using the phone behind the wheel of the car whenever it rings, it has been reported.According to Hampshire News, buses across the region will be carrying a message telling motorists to hang up conversations while travelling. This comes after increased legislation from the Department for Transport means that drivers caught on the phone will pick up a three-point licence penalty and a £60 fine.It could be that such a punishment also extends to a car insurance policy, as cover firms may increase costs if they consider a motorist to be a road risk."Even if you are a careful driver, it is easy to be distracted by a phone call or text - and that split-second lapse in concentration could result in a crash," said local councillor Mel Kendal.Department for Transport statistics shows that some 2,943 people were killed on the roads in 2007.
