Police put off-road drivers under spotlight

Tuesday, 27/11/2007

Drivers who stray off-road into the Welsh countryside will be targeted by police in the country, a national news provider claims.

A joint initiative funded between Dyfed-Powys Police and the Countryside Council for Wales has been set up in order to keep the area unspoilt.

It may be that those who pick up a motoring conviction for the activity - also known as green laning - suffer from increased car insurance policy prices in the future.

But Superintendent Steve Hughson from the constabulary commented that awareness will be raised regarding restrictions.

"We will be providing information and education to local residents, businesses and visitors to the area to ensure that people know where they can legally go," he said.

Meanwhile, figures from the Association of British Drivers show that 35 per cent of motorists in Wales are caught committing offences on the road via speed cameras.
