Police warn drivers against opportunist theft

Wednesday, 28/11/2007

A number of car theft incidents in the Greater Manchester area have prompted local police to issue an appeal to drivers, it has been reported.

The BBC states that 12 motorists have been targeted by criminals in and around Stockport, with most incidents occurring due to keys being left in unattended cars.

Such activity can seriously affect a car insurance policy, with cover companies often reacting to negligent behaviour by upping the cost of a premium the next time it is up for renewal.

"By ensuring that keys are not left easily accessible through letterboxes or windows, the public can help us to reduce offences even further," commented Detective Constable Glen Draper of Stockport CID.

This comes as research from the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety has found that 42 per cent of motorists in the region "grossly underestimate" the thinking distance factored into traffic collision estimates.
