Manchester motorists paid out close to £500,000 over the past 12 months because they could not refrain from using bus lanes, according to a local news source.
The Manchester Evening News found that Wilmslow Road in the south of the city was a hotspot for the offence, with 40 per cent of incidents occurring there.
It may be that the £60 notice which can be picked up for the crime has an effect on car insurance policies.
This is because those with a conviction could be viewed to be risky on the road and given an increased bill as a result.
"I can understand the frustration of drivers who are sat in traffic jams when there are empty lanes beside them," said Sean Corker from Manchester Against Road Tolls.
Meanwhile, a motorist has challenged his local council to prove that speed cameras are effective.
Dave Finney, from Slough, stated that he "can find no evidence" that they bring down speeding.
