Motorists in the UK may have been scammed more than £8 billion (bn) by rogue mechanics, according to new research.Figures from insurance.co.uk show that 34 per cent of people believe that they have been fleeced by £100, while 51 per cent stated that they think the amount is over £500.As a result, the body added that 57 per cent of motorists steer clear of mechanics, while five per cent of drivers do the required maintenance themselves - despite the fact that it could damage their car insurance policy."Whilst the vast majority of car mechanics and garages are entirely reputable, our research highlights that there are a number of rogue tradesmen trying to exploit drivers and consumer confidence in the industry is low," said Steve Grainger from the website. This comes as Malcolm Tarling from the British Insurers Association has stated that car insurance policies in the UK are on the rise.
