'Romance for drivers' with new texting service

Monday, 26/01/2009

Car insurance customers and drivers looking for friendship or love can now use a new mobile social networking scheme to make connections on the road.MYPL8, a new pay-as-you-go service, allows users to meet up with other drivers by making a note of their car registration. If the other person is also a MYPL8 member, the two can exchange messages and share information as they wish.According to Euan Williamson, founder of the service, MYPL8 is a positive way for drivers to interact with one another."We don't promise to help people find the partner of their dreams but it is happening," he said."Others are making friends or simply chatting with owners of similar cars, especially vintage and more unusual models, or reporting potentially serious vehicle defects like faulty brake lights to fellow members."However drivers have been cautioned that they should not send texts while driving. In September 2008, the BBC cited research from the RAC Foundation which found that drivers between the ages of 17 and 24 had 35 per cent slower reaction times when they were reading or writing texts behind the wheel. Drivers using hand-held devices on the road could face a fine of £60 and up to three penalty points on their licence, which could also impact their car insurance premium.
