Simple Steps 'Can Save Money'

Sunday, 18/04/2010

Car insurance customers keen to cut motoring costs in the current economic climate can make savings by changing their habits behind the wheel, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has claimed.

Ensuring they do not go too fast is one way drivers can reduce the amount they spend, the organisation advised.

"Edging over the motorway speed limit to 80 mph saves very little time, but it will cost typically around three or four pence per mile more," it stated.

Furthermore, the group pointed out that driving smoothly and turning off the engine when stuck in traffic can also save money at the pumps. According to IAM, another way to cut fuel consumption is to remove excess weight from the car, such as empty roof racks and unnecessary baggage in the boot.

Air conditioning and heated windows drain power; keep the windows clean and they will rarely mist up. Use air conditioning sparingly but do switch it on for about 10 minutes a month to keep it in good condition.

Plan your route carefully before setting off to avoid congestion, prevent getting lost and wasting valuable fuel. Take the most direct route and go at off-peak times if possible.
