Smart fortwo celebrates ten years in production

This week sees the Smart fortwo celebrate its tenth year in production.Some 900,000 people have picked up the model - which can save space as well as help reduce a carbon footprint - over 37 countries since it first rolled out of a French factory.Dr Dieter Zetsche, head of Mercedes-Benz and chairman of the management board at Daimler AG, owner of Smart, called the efficiency of the vehicles "exemplary".Travelling in an environmentally-friendly vehicle could help motorists pick up cheaper car insurance deals, as cover firms may view drivers as less of a road risk.Dr Dieter Zetsche remarked: "The Smart fortwo is a clever solution and fun to drive. Had we not invented it ten years ago, we would have to do so now."Meanwhile, Daimler has stated that from October it will be fitting its Smart fortwo models with a micro-hybrid start-stop system.
