Speed Camera Dilemma

Monday, 04/01/2010

Britain has become the speed camera capital of Europe with the number of cameras almost trebling in six years.

Figures from 2001 revealed there were around 1,500 speed traps; however recent figures show that the number has risen to over 4,300.

Many motorists believe that the number of speeding offences can be directly related to the increase in speed cameras throughout the UK. As the number of speed cameras goes up the number of speeding offences and disqualifications for speeding are becoming more and more common in today's motoring community.

As a driver caught speeding you can expect to receive a fixed fine and have penalty points added to your license. The cost of the fine and the amount of points depends on the seriousness of the speeding offence.

However the average person can receive between 3 and 6 points on their licence from speeding and when it comes to renewing their car insurance, this can make a huge difference to the amount they have to pay.

Whether speeding is on the increase or not, one fact remains, recent figures estimate that around 1.3 million drivers had on average around 9 points on their licence.

Motoring experts have expressed that the high number of motorists breaking the law by speeding are seen as a “real menace to the roads but by just hiking up the number of speed cameras on the roads will do little to stop them, speed cameras are not the be-all-and-end-all of road safety-but they do assist in cutting down speeding motorists”.
