Speed cameras can help to reduce accidents and car insurance claims, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).The group made this comment after it was announced funding was being withdrawn from the Wiltshire Safety Camera Partnership. It stated the move was misplaced tokenism.Neil Greig, IAM research and policy director, said: "To describe revenue from safety cameras as a tax is emotive, but not true."He added: "Road safety impact is greatest at fixed camera sites."Mr Greig stated such safety measures are most effective when coupled with active road policing and long term engineering improvements.Safety cameras should be used is addition to "cops in cars", but not scrapped, he concluded.Earlier this month, IAM noted there had been an increase in the number of people taking to bikes in a bid to cut costs. It advised motorists to allow sufficient "wobble room" when overtaking so cyclists are not squeezed into the gutter.
