The number of uninsured drivers taking to the road in Suffolk is a problem, according to a local MP.
Some 5,178 people were caught without cover and prosecuted over 2004, reports the Suffolk Evening Star.
It may be that those found to be without car insurance later discover that it is difficult to take out policies in the future because cover companies could deem them to be a hazard on the roads.
David Ruffley, MP for Stowmarket, commented that the figures suggest the region has a bigger problem with the activity than its neighbours.
He added: "Clamping down on uninsured drivers is vital to keeping our roads a safer place to be for the vast majority of Suffolk's residents who are law abiding."
Meanwhile, research from Tesco has found that motorists may be losing out on savings by not switching their car insurance deals regularly.
The supermarket giant stated that one in ten has not switched either in the last decade or at all.
