UK laws state that if motorists use or keep a vehicle on a public road, they must display a valid tax disc - As the registered owner of a car, it’s their responsibility to tax it.
Most UK motorists accept that driving a car comes with some significant costs- insurance, tax, upkeep, services, fuel etc. However an increasing number of motorists are breaking the law by not paying for their vehicle to be insured or taxed.
The DVLA have introduced online renewal improvements making it quicker and easier for motorists to renew their tax discs, with greater flexibility.
In addition a new incentive has been set up; meaning anyone using DVLA’s electronic licensing service gets entered into a free prize draw to win a brand new car – hopefully this will encourage motorists to remember to renew their road tax, reducing the number of motorist who drive in the UK illegally.
A change in legislation will provide for a five-day period of grace from the requirement to display a tax disc only where that disc is purchased online, by phone or by post, giving motorists the opportunity to renew their road tax once they have remembered it has expired without receiving a fine for forgetting.
New cars which emit less than 130g/km of CO2 will benefit from new road tax laws, as they will be exempt from road tax for the first year, but more polluting cars will have higher fees. This is yet another motivational tactic to tempt motorists to pay their road tax and encourage motorists to become ‘greener’.
