Used Car Buyers 'Are Looking For Smaller, Greener Vehicles'

Tuesday, 11/05/2010

More than a third of used car buyers looking to save money on everything from motor insurance to fuel are planning to trade in their current vehicle for a smaller model, according to a new study. Research by EurotaxGlass's revealed around 38 per cent of those questioned intended to buy a more compact and eco-friendly vehicle in order to cut costs.

A further 29 per cent said they were thinking about switching from a petrol vehicle to a diesel model to save money on fuel. Commenting on the findings the managing editor of Glass's Guide said: "Household budgets are being squeezed ever-more tightly and consumers are looking for new ways to reduce their outgoings."

He added: "This new survey illustrates how attitudes towards high-polluting cars are hardening."

But he added a note of caution for those thinking of moving to diesel: 'There are certainly benefits to driving a diesel, with greater fuel efficiency and lower vehicle excise duty – or 'road tax'. But buyers need to be aware that these models tend to cost more to purchase than their petrol counterparts, and it can take years to recoup this investment through reduced running costs.
