Vest scheme brightens up pupils

Friday, 25/01/2008

Primary school children will be kept safe on the roads thanks to the introduction of high visibility jackets, it has been claimed.

The Grimsby Telegraph reports that North East Lincolnshire Council officials have handed out the garments in the hope that motorists will slow down.

Indeed, it may be that those who change their driving habits as a result of the initiative save money on their car insurance policies.

This is because cover firms could choose to increase costs if they consider a motorist a risk on the road.

According to the council's head of primary school standards Peter Kipling, the move is "dynamic" and "exciting".

"The children will be like walking billboards for road safety," he said.

He added: "Even better, if we can make these 'cool', there is a better chance they will continue to wear the vests."

Department for Transport figures show that 3,150 people were killed in road traffic collisions in 2006.
