Women Are Taking To The Wheel

Thursday, 24/06/2010

More women than ever before are taking an interest in motor sport according to recent research, with almost a third interested in attending a track day. More than a quarter said that they regularly watch motoring programmes on TV, and around one in six watch Grand Prix coverage, which is surely a higher proportion than men.

More than ten per cent said that they seize every opportunity to get behind the wheel, even if it means that they act as designated driver. And nearly a third is hankering to take part in a track day.

The rise is said to be due to the plethora of motoring programmes on the TV and the bigger role female motor drivers are playing in the limelight. Around 8% of competition rally drivers being female.

Women are now also taking more interest in what goes on beneath the bonnet, half of women say car maintenance is a top priority.

"Our research clearly shows that today's woman is taking a keen interest in cars and taking every opportunity to get behind the wheel," says an industry expert.

"What's really interesting is that these driving divas are prepared to make major sacrifices in order to finance their cars, whether it's cutting back on nights out or downscaling their wardrobe."
