Women Say They Are Intimidated On Roads

Wednesday, 12/05/2010

Nearly one in six women and one in ten men say that they have been threatened on roads in the UK says motor insurance research. The study also revealed that a large majority of people believe that the problem is getting worse.

The problem has led to around 13 per cent of women feeling less confident about driving alone, compared to just 0.01 per cent of men. Women cited fear of aggression as the number one reason that they feel afraid to drive by themselves. One in ten of all men have either carried a weapon in the past or would consider doing so, the motor insurance survey found.

The respondents talked of a range of driver experiences such as motorway chases, being followed home, verbal abuse, intimidation and violent physical attacks.

"The results of the survey show just how bad the problem of road bullying has become," said a motor insurance spokesman.

"The fact that over 13 per cent of women lack the confidence to drive by themselves on the roads largely due to the aggressive drive culture that exists is appalling."

"We need all organisations connected with driving, together with the Government and the Police to take action and offer far more advice on road safety so we can start to combat the bully antics that are becoming a daily part of life on our roads," he added.
