Yorkshire motorists 'not using new ring road'

Friday, 21/12/2007

Drivers in Sheffield are flouting traffic restrictions by not travelling on a new section of ring road, it has been claimed.

Local councillor Bryan Lodge has commented that those who continue to use the Wicker may be risking hold-ups, the Sheffield Star reports.

In addition, it may be that the motorists are risking invalidating their car insurance policies if they pick up a conviction for the act.

This is because some cover firms view poor road history as indicative of a dangerous drive and increase costs as a result.

"Whenever there is change in the traffic system it takes people time to get used to it. It is an indication of the volumes of traffic we have on our roads," said the official.

Today is expected to be one of the year's busiest roads in the UK as some 18 million motorists attempt to go home for Christmas.
