Wet Roads: a Dangerous Condition

Thursday, 19/11/2009

British divers are no strangers to driving in poor weather conditions, yet despite this a large number of road traffic accidents still occur when it has been raining.

Many car accidents linked to wet roads could have been prevented with the correct driving style but unfortunately motorists are still suffering serious personal injuries in car crashes throughout the country.

Reduced visibility can increase a motorist's chance of an accident and can increase their car insurance premium as the result of collision with another motorist.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), around 10% of cars on the road have at least one tyre with an illegal tread depth. This reduces braking effectiveness; increases risk of collision, and could lead to a hefty fine and points on your license.

Stopping distances doubles on wet roads and the risk of a skid can be trebled if the tread depth is only at the legal minimum of 1.6 mm. And if motorists have to brake hard on one of the 10% of road surfaces with below average skid resistance, the skid risk rises by around 50%.

Motorists face many challenges when driving in the rain, with many potential hazards. However if motorists ensure their vehicles are in good condition, they adapt their driving style accordingly, and increase safety margins it can still be possible to make safe progress.
