The Taxi of the Future?
We’ve all seen the driverless vehicles in sci-fi films, but now you can lay your eyes upon a real one in London’s Science Museum. Known as the ULTra (Urban Light Transport), it is on display alongside some of the greatest discoveries and inventions in history in a display called ‘The Making of The Modern World’.
The idea of a driverless vehicle may sound scary to some, but the inventors claim that it is perfectly safe and also hold many benefits for transportation systems across the globe, as well as the environment.
The ULTra isn’t just science-fiction; its complete science fact. The driverless transport system is currently being tested in and around Heathrow airport, taxiing passengers around at the simple push of a destination button, much like that of an elevator. The taxis run on their own intricate road system, so they do not interfere with other airport traffic and walking passengers.
The current system is limited to airports right now, but the creators hope that it will soon be able to benefit city transportation systems as they offer excellent accessibility and short trip times. The ULTra is run on an electric motor capable of reaching speeds of up to 25mph, making it a quiet but effective way to travel.
London Heathrow will soon be using this system to transport passengers from car parks to Terminal 5, and they hope that travellers will enjoy experiencing some future technology before jetting off on their holidays.
