A fairer way of judging traffic offences is being suggested by car insurance experts Be Wiser Insurance.
The proposed system would consider the number of years a clean licence has been held when making judgements on any traffic offences.
It is suggested that those with a clean record of over 10 years of motoring, who “trigger” a speed camera by less than 8mph, would be punished less severely than those who had less than 10 years of a clean licence. In this situation those with a “clean 10 year history” would only receive 2 penalty points and a reduced level of fine, rather than the current standard 3 penalty points and the standard level of fine.
Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:
“While speeding is never acceptable, it is something which can happen to the best of us sometimes. A sliding scale which takes into account the number of years “good driving” would reduce the punishment for those who have a long and clean driving record, and would make the punishment more proportional.”
Many who have held a clean licence for over ten years would welcome a fairer treatment by the law.
Those caught out with a good record are currently being punished in the same way as those with no proven record at all.
Mark Bower-Dyke continues:
“This is potentially a fairer system as it penalises the “habitual speeder” but provides a more lenient approach and recognition to those who have driven well all their lives.”
As well as changes to the way penalty points are considered there may be positive insurance implications.
Mark Bower-Dyke concludes:
“Motoring offences can cost you on your insurance; a more refined approach to penalty points would give a better indication to insurance companies regarding individual drivers. Being able to tell the difference between someone who has had a good driving record and those who have not could be invaluable. For many of us this could mean lower insurance premiums as well as fairer penalties.”
