“Toughen Up the Punishment, Not The Law” says Be Wiser Insurance Poll

Thursday, 28/01/2010

39% of UK motorists believe that more severe penalties are required for drink drivers, according to a poll conducted by car insurance experts Be Wiser Insurance.

However only 6% of those polled believe the drink driving limit should be reduced.

Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:

“While nearly 40% of motorists would prefer the punishments for drink driving to be higher for offenders, UK drivers seem happy with the current legal limits for alcohol consumption and driving.”

Harsher punishments for drink driving could involve larger fines or cars being confiscated – especially from repeat offenders.

Mark Bower-Dyke continues:

“The penalties for motoring convictions are intended to act as a deterrent – yet it appears that UK motorists consider the current punishments to be not enough of a threat to drink-drivers.”

Tightening the law could potentially catch out responsible drivers whereas increasing those punishments would act as a deterrent for those who flaunt the law.

Mark Bower-Dyke concludes:

“Drinking and driving is never a good idea as even a small amount of alcohol in your system can impair your driving ability. It seems UK motorists want punishments to be harsher for real transgressors.”
